Top 5 Card Protection Mistakes TCG Collectors Make (And How to Fix Them)

Most card damage is preventable. After talking to hundreds of collectors and sellers, the same mistakes come up over and over. Here are the five most common ones — and exactly how to fix them.

Mistake #1: Using PVC Sleeves or Pages

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is cheap but deadly for cards long-term. It off-gasses plasticizers that migrate into card surfaces, causing permanent stickiness, cloudiness, and color transfer — especially on foil cards.

Fix: Always check that sleeves and binder pages say "acid-free" and "no PVC" or "PP material." Our 9-pocket binder pages are 100% polypropylene — safe for long-term storage.

Mistake #2: Skipping the Top Loader for Valuable Cards

A soft sleeve alone bends under surprisingly little pressure. If a card is worth more than the cost of a top loader (about $0.15 each in bulk), it should be in a top loader. Full stop.

Fix: Keep a stack of top loaders on hand — buying 100-packs keeps the cost per unit low.

Mistake #3: Storing Cards Vertically Without Support

Cards stored upright in a box with empty space lean and develop a permanent curve. This is especially bad for foils and thicker cards.

Fix: Use foam dividers to fill every section snugly. Cards should stand straight with slight resistance — not flopping around or packed so tight they can't be removed.

Mistake #4: Leaving Sealed Product Unprotected

Sealed booster boxes and packs lose value quickly when the packaging gets dented, bent, or exposed to humidity and UV light. Many collectors underestimate how much packaging condition affects resale value.

Fix: Store booster packs in UV-protection magnetic display cases. They look great on shelves and protect the seal.

Mistake #5: Shipping Without Corner Guards

Even with a top loader and rigid mailer, the corners of a package take abuse in USPS sorting machines. Corner dings are the #1 cause of "not as described" claims for raw cards sold online.

Fix: Add corner guards to every single card shipment. At 200 for $18.99, it's less than $0.10 per shipment — far cheaper than one refund.
